Stash Busting: Colette Sorbetto Top

I downloaded Colette's Sorbetto top a few months ago to make myself a new top using something out of my stash. How hard is it to pick a fabric and sew it up? Quite hard it seems. After changing my mind half a dozen times, I finally settled on this fabric. It's some kind of synthetic fabric (If I work out exactly what it is I'll update this) with a see through design of flowers and leaves in navy blue. I've had it in my stash for longer than I can remember (so, probably at least 10 years). I lined it (for obvious reasons) with matching navy blue lining. Also from the stash.

I wasn't too sure of the sizing, so started with a calico toile in a size 6 (at least I think that's what it was!) It turned out too roomy though, so I ended up making a size 2 and lengthened it approximately 5cm.

I used french seams in my version, and was so keen to finish that I forgot that being fully lined I should have done the side seams last. (Or maybe used binding on the neck and armholes like the instructions that I didn't even read!) I didn't really feel like undoing french seams, so to finish the armholes I folded back the main fabric and lining and topstitched them together. Not the neatest solution, but it got the job done!

If I were to make another top from this pattern, I would make a few more adjustments first. The bust dart needs to be lowered and shortened by 2cm, and the armholes need to come down by about the same amount.

Overall though, I like how this top turned out. What do you think?

  1. I think it looks very chic. Navy in the summer is always so fresh looking to me. But what I think is best about it, is it's not a just any ol' t-shirt, so this sets it above the crowd. Well done! (And yay for stash busting!)
